There are so many wedding photographers out there. At first glance, they all seem the same and it can be really overwhelming to choose one. It’s easy to stress over such an important decision. After all, they are in charge of documenting the best day of your life. However, try to enjoy the process. I am going to walk you through how to choose a wedding photographer that is the perfect fit for you.
I struggle so hard to decide what style I like best, so if that’s you, you aren’t alone. A good way to narrow down your style is to go on Pinterest and save all the wedding photos that you love. Then look back and recognize similarities between the photos. Are the photos you pinned more candid and documentary style? Cinematic? Bright and airy? Once you have that narrowed down, you can start looking into photographers in the area.
This is a big factor in most couple’s vendor choices. I may be biased, but I don’t think you should cut corners on your wedding photography. You want to have 100% faith that your photographer is going to capture your favorite day expertly and professionally.
Different photographers have different packages with what they offer. Some photographers go all out with their packages that include film, photo prints, client gifts and beyond. If it’s important to you to have full day coverage, you may choose someone that offers 12 hours of coverage, but no “extras” like engagement session, complimentary prints or USB. If you only need 8 hours, then you might want to splurge on the package that includes all the bells and whistles. Don’t be afraid to meet with multiple photographers to find the perfect fit for you.
One photographer can definitely handle the day on their own. A second shooter is a nice add-on that will help the lead capture multiple angles which can be really great for the ceremony and can help keep the timeline on track (the lead gets the bride getting ready while the second gets the groom getting ready). Most photographers offer second shooters as part of their packages, these do however cost more.
You are going to spend a lot of time with your wedding photographer between your engagement session, planning meetings and of course the day of the wedding. You want to have warm feelings towards them and genuinely feel that they are on your side.
Unfortunately, not every photographer is honest and scammers do exist. Read what past clients have to say about them. If something doesn’t seem right, or they don’t answer your questions the way you like, it’s probably best to move on.
Wedding planning can be stressful, but try to enjoy it! Remember, your photographer should be relieving stress, not adding to it. Choosing a photographer can be hard, but hopefully these tips helped. I serve brides in Washington and Oregon and am dedicated to helping them have the fun, beautiful, stress free wedding of their dreams. You can connect with me and view more of my work on my website.
