Tips for Planning a Wedding on a Budget

Your wedding day is one of the best days of your life, and you probably want to pull out all the stops for it. That is until you start getting quotes from vendors. It can be really overwhelming to plan the wedding of your dreams in this economy, but luckily I am here to give you some tips for planning a wedding on a budget, but still making it beautiful and fun. Keep reading to get some tips on budgeting for your wedding.

First, I’m going to share some tips for planning a wedding on a budget, starting with the services that are absolutely worth the splurge—even when you’re keeping costs in check.

1. Venue

Your venue sets the tone for the whole day. A beautiful venue ensures that your photos will look good and that your guests will be comfortable and have fun (I have worked at not-so-nice venues and guests tend to leave early at those). Plus, there is no need to spend a lot of money on décor if the venue is beautiful on its own.

This is not me saying you should drop $40k on the most luxurious venue in your area. A great way to save on a venue is to get married in the off-season (this varies from region to region) and on a weekday. Monday – Friday dates are usually cheaper than Saturdays.

Another great option is state parks, especially here in the Pacific Northwest. The parks are absolutely stunning and are a great budget friendly option when planning a wedding on a budget. The Cama Center is a hidden gem with a view of the Olympic mountains and Whidbey Island.

Also, don’t count out backyard weddings! A huge perk is that they don’t cost anything to rent, so you can put money toward sprucing up your own property. Planting a flower garden and hanging some string lights can really transform a plain backyard.

2. Photographer

I might be a little biased as a wedding photographer myself, but your photographer is such an important vendor. They will be with you the entire day and are charged with capturing your precious memories. Some important questions to ask a potential photographer are:

What gear do you have?

Do you have backup gear in case of malfunction?

Does your camera have dual SD card slots?

How do you backup your photos?

Do you have a contract?

Are you licensed and insured?

Can I see a few galleries?

How many weddings have you done?

3. Day of Coordinator

Day of coordinator is usually the first thing couples cut from their budget. You will not regret hiring a good coordinator; they really keep everything running smoothly, manage vendors, and keep everyone on time, all so you can enjoy your day to the fullest. If you are putting time and effort into planning, you deserve to completely enjoy your day, and not have to stress about anything.

If your budget is really tight, I recommend still hiring a coordinator. There are plenty of coordinators that are new to industry who will work for a very reasonable price or even free. If you decide to go with someone new to the industry, make sure to ask for reviews and what their experience is.

Now, I’m going to share tips for planning a wedding on a budget by highlighting areas where you can cut back without sacrificing the overall experience

1. Tips for Planning a Wedding on a Budget: Food and Cake

Catering is one of the biggest expenses for a wedding. But remember, your guests will be just as happy with Mission Barbecue or a taco bar as they will with a fancy-plated meal. They came for YOU, not for the food.

Right now, small cut cakes are very in style. An 8 inch, beautifully decorated cake (even from a grocery store!) are less than $100 and look and taste great. Costco or Sam’s Club is a great option for sheet cakes for your guests. Costco cake is always a crowd pleaser and very economical.

2. Tips for Planning a Wedding on a Budget: Alcohol

If you and your partner aren’t big drinkers, don’t be afraid to have a dry wedding. Mocktails taste just as good as regular cocktails. If you want alcohol at your wedding, consider just having beer and wine. If you are serving alcohol, you must have a licensed bartender. When hiring a bartender, try to find one that allows you to supply your own alcohol. You can buy alcohol wholesale from Costco or Sam’s Club, which saves a lot when planning a wedding on a budget.

3. Tips for Planning a Wedding on a Budget: Dress & Shoes

There are lots of bridal shops that sell off the rack dresses that are just as beautiful as custom made to order gowns. Here and Now Bridal in Virginia has a large selection of dresses for less than $1000. Something Blue Bridal Boutique also has a great selection, all under $2800.

If you stay in a full length gown the whole day, no one will know if you have designer shoes or Target shoes. The most important thing about your wedding shoes is that they are comfortable (you will be on your feet all day!)

4. Tips for Planning a Wedding on a Budget: Stationary

Don’t get me wrong, custom-made stationary is beautiful. I myself was a budget bride, and I just could not justify spending thousands on paper products that my guests will just throw away anyway. Canva has a lot of great templates for free. Canva pro is also very affordable if you have your heart set on one of the pro templates. Canva will also print your invites and mail them to you for a great price.

5. Tips for Planning a Wedding on a Budget: Floral Arrangements

Don’t get me wrong, I love a real floral arrangement as much as the next person, but they add up quickly. Consider candles and small DIYed floral bud vases for centerpieces. If you are crafty, you can buy flowers wholesale and make your own arrangements (this is harder than it looks though!). Another option is fake florals that can be purchased or rented. Done correctly, fake flowers can be just as beautiful as real. As I said earlier, choosing a venue that is beautiful on its own will cut down on decor costs.
