Stimson-Green Mansion Wedding Guide: What Couples Should Know

If you’re looking for a Seattle wedding venue with history, character, and a setting that doesn’t feel like a typical event space, Stimson-Green Mansion deserves a closer look.

Tucked into Seattle’s First Hill neighborhood at 1204 Minor Avenue, the mansion was completed in 1901 for lumberman and real estate developer C.D. Stimson and his wife, Harriet. Designed by Spokane architect, Kirtland Cutter, the home is one of Seattle’s most distinctive examples of eclectic architecture and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated as a Seattle Landmark.

Today, the mansion is owned by the Washington Trust for Historic Preservation and serves as both its headquarters and a venue for weddings and private events.

For couples who want their wedding to feel elegant, historic, and distinctly Seattle, there is a lot to love here.

The History of Stimson-Green Mansion

To understand what makes the mansion so special, it helps to know a little about its history.

C.D. Stimson commissioned Kirtland Cutter to design the home at the end of the 19th century. Construction was completed in 1901, when First Hill was one of Seattle’s most prominent residential neighborhoods. At the time, the area was home to some of the city’s wealthiest and most influential families.

The house remained with the Stimson family until 1914, when they moved to a larger home in The Highlands. Seattle businessman Joshua Green and his wife, Laura, purchased the mansion in 1915.

The Green family lived there for approximately 60 years and made relatively few changes to the home. That is one of the reasons the mansion is so interesting today. Many of its original architectural details and historic character remain intact.

In 2001, Priscilla “Patsy” Bullitt Collins, C.D. Stimson’s granddaughter, donated the property to the Washington Trust for Historic Preservation. The Trust continues to care for the building today.

When you get married here, you’re not simply renting a pretty historic building, you are celebrating in a house that has been a part of Seattle’s history for more than a century.

The Architecture Is the Main Attraction

The exterior of Stimson-Green Mansion is primarily Tudor and Gothic Revival, with steep gables, half-timbering, pointed arches, and intricate woodwork, but the interior is where things get especially interesting. Kirtland Cutter didn’t stick to a single architectural style. The mansion incorporates Tudor and Gothic influences alongside Moorish, Romanesque, Neoclassical, and Renaissance details. Stimson-Green mansion is truly one of a kind and such a beautiful space.

You’ll find leaded glass windows, elaborate woodwork, fireplaces, vintage fixtures, historic furnishings, and architectural details that simply aren’t found in a modern wedding venue. The result is a space that already has visual depth before you bring in flowers, tablescapes, or other wedding décor.

Getting Married at Stimson-Green Mansion

The mansion works particularly well for couples who want an intimate or mid-sized wedding rather than a large ballroom celebration.

The Library is one of the primary event spaces and can accommodate up to 75 guests for a seated ceremony. For a seated dinner, the Library accommodates approximately 50 guests, with additional seating available in the adjacent Parlor. Cocktail-style receptions can accommodate significantly more guests, with the main house able to host up to approximately 150 people.

The important thing is to think about how you want your guests to experience the space, rather than choosing a guest count based solely on the maximum capacity. A smaller wedding allows you to take advantage of the mansion’s rooms and architecture without making the house feel crowded. It also gives guests the opportunity to actually appreciate the details of the property.

What Makes Stimson-Green Different From a Modern Wedding Venue?

The biggest difference is that there isn’t much you need to manufacture – the architecture and decor speak for itself. Stimson-Green Mansion has so much character and is beautiful on its own, without needing to bring in lots of outside decor.

The fireplaces, historic furnishings, chandeliers, leaded glass, woodwork, and distinctive rooms provide a natural backdrop for an elegant wedding, but that doesn’t mean you can’t personalize it. In fact, simple design choices can work well here. You can choose details that complement what is already there: beautiful florals, candles, understated stationery, classic linens, and thoughtful tablescapes.

Wedding Photography at Stimson-Green Mansion

From a photography standpoint, historic venues like Stimson-Green are especially rewarding because there is so much visual variety within a relatively small area.

The Library can provide a dramatic setting for your ceremony and formal photographs. The fireplaces, windows, stairways, and architectural details throughout the house can be incorporated into portraits and detail photographs. The mansion is however, rather dark, so flash is a must here. But there is also an outdoor component to the property for natural light portraits.

One of my favorite things about photographing weddings in historic homes is that there are endless creative opportunities. You can create more editorial portraits in one room, move somewhere else for something quieter and more candid, and then use the architectural details for photos of your dress, invitation suite, flowers, and other details.

Catering and Venue Logistics

Stimson-Green Mansion has an exclusive catering relationship with Kaspars Catering & Events. Current venue information lists the Library, Parlor, dining spaces, and other areas of the property as available depending on the event format.

For couples, an exclusive caterer can simplify some of the planning because the catering team is already familiar with the property and its layout. It is still worth asking about the current catering minimums, rental requirements, staffing, bar service, setup and breakdown, and exactly which spaces are included in your rental. These details can change, so they should be confirmed directly with the venue before booking.

Parking is another practical consideration. Because the mansion is located in First Hill rather than on a large private estate, your guests won’t have the same parking experience they would at a rural wedding venue. Make sure your invitations or wedding website give guests clear information about parking and transportation.

Is Stimson-Green Mansion Right for Your Wedding?

I would strongly consider it if you want:

  • A historic Seattle wedding venue
  • An intimate or mid-sized celebration
  • Architecture to be a major part of your wedding aesthetic
  • A venue with character rather than a blank ballroom
  • An elegant, editorial feel
  • Beautiful indoor portrait options
  • A venue with a genuine connection to Seattle history
  • A wedding that feels classic without feeling overly traditional

It may not be the best choice if you want a large open floor plan, a modern industrial aesthetic, or a venue where you have complete freedom to bring in your own catering and transform the space from the ground up. That’s not really what Stimson-Green is about, its appeal comes from taking advantage of what is already there.

Why Stimson-Green Mansion Is Worth Considering

There are plenty of beautiful wedding venues around Seattle, but historic mansions offer something different. At Stimson-Green, the setting isn’t simply a backdrop for the wedding. The architecture, rooms, furnishings, and history become part of the experience.

Your guests are walking through the same rooms where the Stimson and Green families lived and entertained more than a century ago. The house has survived enormous changes to Seattle’s First Hill neighborhood, and its preservation is part of what makes it such a unique place to celebrate.

For couples drawn to historic architecture, thoughtful design, and a wedding that feels personal rather than cookie-cutter, Stimson-Green Mansion is one of Seattle’s venues that is genuinely worth touring.

And if you’re already considering it, take your time during the tour. Look beyond the main event room. Pay attention to the windows, fireplaces, woodwork, staircases, furniture, and smaller rooms. Those are the details that will ultimately make your wedding photographs feel like your wedding at Stimson-Green, rather than photographs that could have been taken anywhere.

If Stimson-Green Mansion isn’t what you are looking for, I also recommend MV Skansonia, Fox Hollow Farm, The Ruins, and more. You can read about my top 25 Seattle wedding venues here.
